What is space debris? How did it end up in space? And what's the big deal?

After half a century of space exploration, we are suddenly faced with a problem only imagined in science fiction - humans have created a landfill of forgotten space debris - orbiting the Earth.

With newspaper headlines repeatedly warning us about satellite debris falling from the sky, the space junk orbiting the Earth has finally reached public consciousness.

The future of space exploration and the network of satellites that contribute to our everyday lives and power our modern communication systems are at risk.

In the film Space Junk, we meet Don Kessler, former head of NASA's space junk programme, who was the first to raise awareness of the frightening prospects that increased activity in space would mean for the amount of space junk orbiting Earth. Space Junk is a visual tale of how satellite collisions with space junk will gradually fill the skies with debris if we do nothing. Fortunately, there are solutions, and the film offers several of them.
