One of the pioneers of astronomy, Galileo Galilei, looked to the heavens and made astronomical discoveries that were groundbreaking for his time
Later, Einstein sought to understand the universe by devising a new set of mathematical rules, the theory of relativity. However, it was challenged by quantum mechanics, including the work of Niels Bohr.
The truth is, there is still a lot we don't know about our universe.
The film Secrets of the Universe captures the excitement and science currently unfolding at the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world's largest physics laboratory.
CERN includes the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest accelerator. The accelerator is located in an underground ring 27 kilometres long under the Jura Mountains and crosses the border between Switzerland and France.
The LHC makes it possible to accelerate both protons and heavy ions to incredible speeds.
Researchers hope to create some of the particles predicted by theoretical particle physicists in proton-proton collisions and to prove the existence of the postulated gluon-quark plasma through experiments with heavy ions.
The LHC has already proved its worth when in 2012 it successfully demonstrated the existence of the Higgs particle predicted by physicist Peter Higgs back in the 1960s.
In Secrets of the Universe, scientist Manuel Calderón de la Barca Sánchez takes us on a journey that provides insight into the enormous forces needed to solve the universe's greatest puzzles.
