In 1609, the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei was the first to turn a primitive telescope towards the heavens and observe the visible light from objects millions of kilometres away
It was the start of a revolution in science and our understanding of the universe.
Since then, telescopes and instruments have been developed to observe not only visible light from stars and planets, but also light invisible to the human eye.
These years, astronomy is experiencing the biggest breakthrough since the invention of the telescope. A global and space-based network of telescopes recording the light of the universe in all wavelengths was unthinkable just decades ago.
The film Unseen Universe illustrates how humans are making new and groundbreaking discoveries using extremely advanced observation technology and supercomputers to analyse data. By connecting telescopes from around the globe, it is now possible to observe events and objects in space as one giant telescope. The technology has meant that capturing images of everything from black holes to detailed insights into the remnants of supernovae is no longer a pipe dream.
Technology is challenging our understanding of the universe and the world we are a part of, enabling us to explore space far beyond the human senses.
Created by ESO and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, among others, the marvellous light of space provides a stunning visual and inspiring insight into human exploration of the universe.
