Welcome to Planetarium
In Planetarium you can experience the starry sky, galaxies and planets up close - in our exhibition, on digital space journeys in the Planetarium Dome or at lectures on astronomy and space travel
MISSION
Planetarium communicates knowledge about astronomy and space travel through lectures, exhibitions, science shows, education, special events, digital space travel and special film screenings. We create enriching and engaging experiences for our guests based on a high level of professional knowledge, personalised guest service and wondrous presentation formats.
Set in our iconic planetarium building located on the waterfront of Sankt Jørgens Sø - and with Europe's largest tilted Planetarium Dome.
VISION
Planetarium will be recognised as Europe's most enriching and engaging science centre, creatively, boldly and surprisingly communicating knowledge about astronomy and space travel.
It began with a solar eclipse
The married couple Helge and Bodil Pedersen were very interested in astronomy. Solar eclipses in particular were high on their wish list when travelling around the world.
Helge Pedersen experienced his first solar eclipse in 1973 in Mauritania. He was captivated by this amazing natural phenomenon. Therefore, he had no doubt that it was something he wanted to experience again.
In 1980, Bodil and Helge travelled to Kenya again for the eclipse. Helge also travelled to Siberia in 1981 and Java in 1983. It was during the eclipse trip to Java that Bodil and Helge shared the idea of building a planetarium in Denmark.
The desire to give more people the opportunity to experience the beauty of the starry sky and the fascinating universe of astronomy was strong in the couple's minds.
To realise the project, Bodil and Helge Pedersen contributed DKK 50 million through the Urania Foundation to build a planetarium. The dream became reality when the Planetarium opened its doors to the universe on 1 November 1989.
The building was designed by architect Knud Munk.
Our sponsors and contributors help us fulfil our purpose; to spread awareness of science in general and space astronomy in particular.
