Imagine a gigantic asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. In Hollywood films like Deep Impact and Armageddon, this is the drama that unfolds. But what do we do in real life? What are our options when a meteor or asteroid threatens to wipe out everything in its path?
This evening, we take an investigative look at how humans can prepare for a potential cosmic catastrophe. Taking inspiration from real missions such as NASA's DART and Hera programmes, we discuss how technology and science can be used to mitigate threats from space. How do we detect dangerous asteroids in time? Can we really push an asteroid off course? And what happens if we fail?
We also delve into what happens if the ultimate disaster strikes. How do we prepare for the human, societal and environmental consequences? With insights from disaster science, you'll gain an understanding of how planetary defence goes hand in hand with emergency preparedness and the ability to protect Earth from a potential global disaster.
The event will provide you with a fascinating mix of astronomy, technology and preparedness strategies. Not only will we hear about what it takes to detect and mitigate threats from space, but also how society is preparing to deal with the consequences if the worst happens. But are we doing enough? It's both scientifically exciting and deeply human.
On stage this evening are two experts with unrivalled experience and insight. Line Drube, astrophysicist from DTU Space and former advisor to the UN on planetary defence, brings sharp science and concrete solutions to the table. Meanwhile, disaster researcher Rasmus Dahlberg shares his insights on how we prepare for the unthinkable. Together, they turn scenarios from science fiction into science fact - and show that planetary defence is not just a dream, but a reality.
Are you fascinated by space or do you love the thrill of global catastrophe? Maybe you just want to understand how we can actually protect our planet? This event is for anyone who wants to learn more about one of the most exciting and complex challenges facing humanity.
